A book born out of "fiery passion," as he himself describes it, Neftali's words.
The Captain's verses, along with Twenty Love Poems, a song without hope, and One Hundred Love Sonnets, form the iconic trilogy of Neruda's romantic poetry. They were written while he was exiled in Italy, with the police constantly threatening him, in complete isolation from friends and acquaintances, with only his beloved Matilde for company.
As the great Chilean poet himself writes in his autobiography: "Unforgettable times! I worked all day, and in the evening Matilde typed my poems. It was the first time we lived together in the same house. In that place of intoxicating beauty, our love grew stronger. And we never parted. There I finished writing a romantic book, a book full of passion and pain, which was published anonymously in Naples under the title The Captain's Verses."
