For over a decade, Nespresso capsule machines dominated the global market. And then, suddenly a few years ago, the company made a shift and created a new machine and capsule technology!

The new machines called Nespresso Vertuo may follow the same pattern, meaning you place the single-use capsule in the machine and always get the same result easily and quickly, but with different technology.

How Vertuo works:

The Vertuo works with Centrifusion technology. What is it?

1. You choose the capsule and place it in the special slot in the machine.
2. The lid comes down and pierces the capsule in the middle and all around.
3. The capsule starts spinning so the machine can read the barcode.
4. Then a preinfusion takes place to slightly wet the coffee and prepare it for brewing.
5. The capsule starts rotating at thousands of revolutions per minute to centrifugally extract the coffee through the holes while water flows into the capsule.

Unlike the classic ones, Vertuo machines have only one power and quantity button. Everything else happens automatically according to the instructions from the barcode on the bottom.

There are capsules for different quantities (with the corresponding cost): 40ml, 80ml, 150ml and 230ml, even 535ml exclusively for the Vertuo Next.

What are the differences from the classic ones?

Obviously, to begin with, it is the overall way the coffee works and is prepared. In the classic ones, it is more similar to traditional espresso machines, where extraction happens when hot water passes under pressure through the coffee. In Vertuo, centrifugal extraction gives a slightly different espresso; personally, I would describe it as a combination of 80% espresso and 20% filter coffee.

And the second and more important difference is the capsules. In the classic ones, apart from the official Nespresso capsules, there are hundreds of compatible options on the market and blends from third-party producers, of course at a lower price. The options are countless, and nothing prevents you from finding both the flavor you like and a lower cost per cup.

For the time being, with Vertuo, there are no compatible capsules from third parties, so you will have to settle for what Nespresso has to offer, at the price it offers them.

In any case, having used the classic ones for about 15 years and Vertuo for 6 months, I would suggest that before making any purchase, you take the above factors into account and then decide which one suits both your taste and your wallet!
